Charmed season 1 episode 1 live stream: Watch online

Charmed‘s premiere will honor the original series, telling the story of three sisters who find themselves gifted with magical abilities after their mother is mysteriously killed.

Similarly to the original Charmed series, which aired from 1998 until 2006 and starred Holly Marie Combs, Alyssa Milano, Shannen Doherty, and Rose McGowan, the first episode of the reboot will detail the impact on three seemingly ordinary women as they come to terms with the sudden death of their mother.

Amongst their grieving, the sisters, Maggie, Mel and Macy, will discover they each possess their own unique power. Following this, a spiritual guide, called a Whitelighter, will reveal that they are in fact witches, destined to fight evil spirits and unite to become The Charmed Ones — the most powerful force for good in the universe.

This is a lot of plot to get through in the first episode. As well as honoring the original characters and story to accommodate for the pre-existing and already established Charmed fans, the show also needs to re-invent the narrative and allow enough explanation so new fans can be drawn to the series.

The synopsis from The CW for tonight’s show is:

"After the tragic death of Mel (Melonie Diaz) and Maggie’s (Sarah Jeffery) mother, the sisters struggle with moving forward but face another huge shock when they learn they have an older sister, Macy (Madeleine Mantock). With the emotions of all three sisters running high, each of the girls suddenly exhibit impossible new abilities: Mel can freeze time, Maggie starts hearing others’ thoughts and Macy has telekinetic powers. While trying to understand their new powers, Harry Greenwood (Rupert Evans), gathers the sisters and reveals they’re actually powerful witches, as was their mother. He also lets them in on a little secret, he’s not really a professor, he’s their “Whitelighter,” a witch’s advisor and guide. The sisters must make the decision to accept their new destiny as The Charmed Ones… and their new duty to protect humankind from the demons that walk among us… one of whom killed their mother"

It looks like there will be a lot of different emotions during the pilot episode, as the plot travels quickly to establish all of the characters and their positions. The episode may feature some time jumps to be able to imply feelings have been worked through without actually showing it. For example, grieving for the sister’s lost mother, and bonding with the newly revealed sister, would have to take time to keep the characters genuine and relatable. Maybe the use of montages will ensure the episode doesn’t go over an hour in length, as well as keeping us intrigued and connected to the sisters and their journey.

Another element to look forward to would be the powers and the effects. Will the reboot take a scary or creepy position, or keep things fun and light-hearted? The threat of demons and spirits must be impactful so we can see the sisters being tested and vulnerable, but I would also like to see a certain amount of reality showing the profound connection between the girls.

Consequently, this would allow the show to explore the themes which are going to be much more significant for the viewer, such as friendship, family and, most importantly, girl power. This was what the original series was praised for, and these topics are going to separate Charmed from other sci-fi shows out there, creating something diverse and unique.
