The Walking Dead will return this Sunday with promises of a “new beginning” for Alexandria, the Saviors, Hill Top, and everyone else that survived Negan. The first episode will be jumping a year and a half ahead of where The Walking Dead ended in season 8, with many changes taking place after eradicating Negan as head of the Sanctuary.

So far as we can tell, Rick has been working on creating a comfortable living arrangement devoid of hostilities and unnecessary murders. Alexandria has become a place where Judith can play without the threat of outsiders causing her harm. And most importantly, Negan is locked up tight somewhere. Still, Rick has ruffled some feathers with his direction and Maggie, Daryl, and maybe even Aaron, aren’t seeing eye to eye on some things.

Despite their difference of opinions, there’s evidence of progress within the communities. Everyone now has a horse, a validating example of how far they’ve come. Since horses could so readily be bitten by walkers, in the past they were an enormous liability. Undoubtedly, the walkers have become a mere nuisance now, and our group has become experts — so walkers no longer pose the same threat they did in the first seasons.

AMC’s schedule on its website gives the synopsis for “A New Beginning” as this:

"Rick and his group make a risky run to D.C. in search of tools they need to build a new world."

It looks like Rick will be continuing Carl’s legacy by building the refuge that he dreamed of constructing. In Carl’s final letter to his father, he spoke of re-establishing the peace and security that existed before the zombie apocalypse. It was his vision to continue looking for more people to create stable communities that wouldn’t have to live in fear.

Sadly enough, it may be this sincere trip to pick up supplies in D.C. to help them continue to build Carl’s dream that will put them in contact with the Whisperers. If they make the Whisperers anything like the comics, the oasis Rick has been hoping for won’t be in the cards anytime soon.
