Goodbye, Captain America? Chris Evans wraps Avengers filming with emotional message
By Mia Johnson
Chris Evans shared an emotional message on Twitter to mark the end of his Avengers 4 reshoots. It sounds like we’ve finally reached the end of the line for Captain America.
Call it an emotional farewell, but Chris Evans became the bearer of his own bad news about his role in the MCU. The actor shared on Twitter Thursday that he had wrapped filming for Avengers 4 reshoots, but that wasn’t the worst part of the news.
It seems that Evans has put the final nail in the coffin to confirm every fan’s worse nightmare: this would be the last time he picks up the shield to play Captain America. For a while now, many fans have assumed this would happen anyway. With Evans’ Marvel contract coming to an end and other projects he has budding on the horizon, it was pretty much clear that he would be moving on from the role.
But Evan’s emotional reflection makes it all the more worse, considering that this announcement is officially coming from him.
Calling it an honor to play the role for eight years, we’re sure it’s been just as much an honor for all the fans who have loved seeing Evans play the role in each movie. Steve Rogers started out as just a boy from Brooklyn, but became so much more. He was a hero not only to his city and his country, but the entire world (and after Avengers 4, likely the whole universe).
The hard part now is piecing together how Captain America will have his goodbye in the movie. Some fans feared Cap would surely die in Infinity War, but the Russo brothers were keen on taking away other characters from us first. But now that the Russos have proved that they’re not afraid to axe our favorite heroes, it only makes sense that Cap could be the one to sacrifice it all just to restore the universe back to normal.
While we can’t say for certain this is the definite way Captain America will say goodbye, there are small hints – such as with leaks of his Avengers 4 suit – that foretell his time is certainly coming to an end.
We know that this is heartbreaking for everyone who’s come to love Chris Evans as Captain America over the years. But Marvel is really clearing out space to make room for newer superheroes. Who knows? Perhaps Bucky will make good and become Captain America in Steve’s honor. It’s the one thing that could probably make fans smile just a little longer.
