Empire season 5 episode 1 live stream: Watch online

With Empire out of their grips and in Eddie’s hands, how will the Lyons preserve their legacy? Will they regain control, or start something new?

Tonight marks the return of music’s most dysfunctional dynasty since the Jacksons. The season premiere of Empire brings the return of the Lyons, including ride-or-die matriarch Cookie and the father/husband/boss everyone loves to hate, Lucious.

When we last left the Lyons’ den, two years ago in the show’s time, Lucious’ one-time friend and mentor Eddie had bought Empire and renamed it Pamplemousse, with Anika as head of A&R. I’m not sure if the name Pamplemousse is this show universe’s version of Apple, but it doesn’t work. Three-syllable names are rarely catchy.

Anyway…

Anika’s moment of glory is short lived. Andre finally got the ultimate vengeance against Anika for the death of his wife and child by killing her at the Pamplemousse launch party.

Jamal suffered a loss when his friend and musical collaborator Tori Ash died of a drug overdose. Heartbroken, Jamal escaped to Europe to live anonymously. We see Jamal in the previews, so that indicates he’s back. Hopefully, his return is permanent. The show just wouldn’t be the same without you, ‘Mal.

The only person who got anything resembling good news in the finale (unless you can count Andre for killing his wife’s murderer), was Hakeem, who found out Tiana was pregnant with his child.

Major changes are ahead for season 5. According to Deadline, Nicole Ari Parker, who guest starred as Eddie’s ex-wife Giselle, is now a series regular.

Deadline reports:

"Season 5 finds Giselle stepping out of the shadow of her ex in an effort to seize power herself. Along the way she’ll tackle grudges, make unexpected alliances and find a surprising love interest."

The previews also show Cookie discovering a new singer who may be the key to taking the Lyons back to their rightful throne.
