Carrie, 35, recalled planning for 2017 to become her year for working on new music and having a baby. But instead, the songstress suffered her first miscarriage.

“I’d kind of planned that 2017 was, you know, going to be the year that I work on new music, and I have a baby,” said Underwood. “We got pregnant early 2017, and didn’t work out.”

When that first miscarriage occurred, Carrie turned to her religious beliefs:

"In the beginning, it was like, ‘Okay, God, we know this is, just wasn’t Your timing. And that is all right. We will bounce back and figure our way through it.’"

Feeling “blessed” amid heartbreak

In 2017, Underwood experienced a second miscarriage. She suffered a third in 2018, reacting by questioning, “What’s the deal? What is all of this?”

Reflecting on her feelings at the time, Carrie admitted that she “had always been afraid to be angry because we are so blessed.” The “Church Bells” singer shared her gratitude for her son, Isaiah, who is “the sweetest thing and…the best thing in the world.”

Carrie said that she decided that if she and her husband could “never have any other kids, that’s okay, because [Isaiah is] amazing.” In addition to her son, Carrie expressed gratitude for her “incredible husband, incredible friends, an incredible job, an incredible kid. Can I be mad? No.”

But Underwood’s decision not to get angry changed when she thought she was having a fourth miscarriage.

Her emotional turning point

Carrie recalled thinking that she was experiencing a fourth miscarriage.

“I got mad,” admitted the singer.

Holding her son, Underwood described wondering why she continued to become pregnant if she “can’t have a [second] kid.” Carrie remembered thinking, “Do something. Either shut the door or let me have a kid.”

On a Saturday, the singer felt as if she “actually… told God how [she] felt.” When she went to the doctor that Monday, fearing that she would be told that she was going through another miscarriage, she was told instead that “everything was great!”

Underwood also revealed that she and her husband often discuss the possibility of adoption.

“We always talk about adoption and about doing it when our child or children are a little older,” she clarified. “In the meantime, we’re lucky to be a part of organizations that help kids, because our focus right now in our lives is helping as many kids as possible.”

For now, Carrie is focused on helping her son understand what it means to become a big brother. She recently told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that the little boy doesn’t quite comprehend the changes that are coming.
