Ajim, Tunisia

So we’ve talked quite a lot about Tatooine, we know, but it is a very cool place, okay? And it takes up a fair amount of A New Hope from the Lars home right through to the cantina. The cantina is what we’re talking here.

We can only assume the Cantina Band is now playing non-stop in your head, and that’s fair. All the better to imagine actually seeing it with your waking eyes, and you can do just that in the Tunisian port city of Ajim, located on the island of Djerba.

The exterior can be seen off the main road in the city, and according to this account from keen fans who previously visited, the current owner of the building is well-aware of its status as a Star Wars legend and even is using parts of the set as a roof for a chicken coop.

Obi-Wan’s home is also located near Ajim. If you continue just outside of the city, there is a tiny white house which was used as the exterior to Ben’s hideaway, where Star Wars fans can pay homage to the Jedi who showed us all the way.

There is also an old mosque on the island which served as the entrypoint to Mos Eisley, seen as Luke and Obi-Wan’s landspeeder approaches, and Tosche Station itself, where Luke met his friend Biggs Darklighter in deleted scenes, is also found in this area.

All in all, there are plenty of reasons to check out Djerba. The island has its own airport which you can fly to direct or from the Tunisian mainland if not, and StarWars.com has handily planned a logistical route that would take you to all sites. It has also provided very useful directions given that there are no street names, so definitely heed their advice before you go.
