Game of Thrones season 8: Maybe it’s a joke, and maybe it’s a spoiler

Is there such a thing as coincidence when it comes to Game of Thrones season 8 information? It’s hard to conclude one way or another.

Sometimes, there are funny questions of timing that have us wondering whether or not those who work on big shows or movies like to wink and nod to us ahead of their work airing, only for us to look back on those comments later and say “oh, actually they were very serious.” It seems that it’s time for Game of Thrones to have that moment (yet again) when it comes to season 8.

Over the weekend, the Creative Arts Emmys were handed out, and there’s now video on YouTube showing one member of the team that won the award for visual effects casually making a joke about how he and the rest of the crew “can’t tell you in what episode Tyrion dies…or doesn’t.”

The reactions suggest that this is just a joke, but if you’ve spent much time in the shadowy world of Game of Thrones season 8 spoilers and speculation, then your ears may have perked up for another reason. Ours certainly did.

Warning: Rumored spoiler discussion starts below.

The current rumor buzzing around places like r/freefolk, which we here at Culturess told you about this past weekend, is that Tyrion will actually die in season 8. It’s unlikely, to put it mildly, that the actual special effects team knew about the possible leaks — but if you don’t know about it, but do know that Tyrion’s going to die, why not pass it off as a joke months ahead of time, in a press room for the Emmys that don’t get as much attention?

Now, granted, it doesn’t seem wise to even jokingly allude to spoilers, but the show is in its final stages. What’s the worst that can happen? The video doesn’t have much attention right now, and, again, it’s not the Emmys that most people notice.

Put it this way: If Nikolaj Coster-Waldau or Peter Dinklage were to joke about this in an acceptance speech, he’d probably swiftly find himself on the wrong end of a statement from HBO denying everything. It’d just be a bad look.

But for these guys? There’s probably not as much risk.
