Every Doctor Who-loving fan is freaking out today as Matt Smith was announced as joining the Star Wars Episode IX cast in an unknown role.

It seems that Matt Smith will travel through space and time once more. Today it was announced that Smith will join the cast of Star Wars Episode IX. Whether or not he’s the side of the light or the dark, we don’t know.

Smith joins a whole new group of new editions to the Star Wars canon including actors Keri Russell, Richard E. Grant, Dominic Monaghan, and Naomi Ackie. Carrie Fisher is also set to return to the film franchise with unused footage from previous episodes to complete her storyline as Princess Leia. Billy Dee Williams will also return as Lando Calrissian in the film.

In Episode IX, it would be nice to see Matt Smith play a Sith Lord of some kind. For most of his career, we’ve watched him play a lovable Time Lord who is filled with childlike wonder while also being over 1,000 years old. To see him play a darker role and take on Kylo and what the Knights of Ren represent would be an interesting take on Smith’s career. It would also bring more light to that side of the Star Wars canon.

We’ll have to wait and see what happens with the rest of the series and what part Matt Smith will play, but we’re excited to have him as part of the world of Star Wars!

dark. Next. Richard E. Grant may be joining Star Wars but his future isn’t blue
