Star Wars: Why Billy Dee Williams’ return is great (and maybe not-so-great)

Everyone loves Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian, and now that he’s coming back to Star Wars, we’re looking at the pros and cons of his return.

The internet was abuzz when we learned that Billy Dee Williams would be returning to the Star Wars world. The actor first came into our lives as Lando Calrissian in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

From there, he became one of the most beloved of the series. So we’re looking at some of the pros and cons of having Billy Dee Williams back in the Star Wars universe!

The pros

More capes! Look, let us be honest: Lando is super cool because of his capes. Even in Solo, his capes were made to be a big deal. He’s fashionable and that fashion sense could come in handy with the new rebels. You just know that Finn would love it.

We would get to see a lot more emotion from Lando this time around. His friends that he fought alongside are dead, and he would have to deal with that. Maybe he and Chewbacca could even bond again over the fact that Han is gone.

Having Billy Dee as part of the cast is providing us, once again, with a character from the original trilogy. With the untimely death of Carrie Fisher, it seemed like we would be without a character from the original films, but his return helps to soothe that loss a bit for fans.

The cons

Well, for one, Han is dead. After seeing Solo: A Star Wars Story, it is clear that there is a lot more to the friendship between Lando Calrissian and Han Solo than we knew. So now that Han is no longer with us, what is going to happen with Lando?

Another con is that the movies tend to bring back characters and kill them. Yes, it works with the plot and makes sense thematically, but that doesn’t mean we like seeing Han and Luke die. Fans definitely don’t want to watch Lando succumb to death either, so that brings a fear that we’ll lose him as well.

And finally, we don’t want Lando to come off as cheesy. Clearly Lucasfilm knows what it’s doing, because he was incredible in Solo: A Star Wars Story but still. It could end up with making him less of the character we know and love.
