According to SpoilerTv, here’s what’s on tap for episode three of Insecure’s third season:

"Issa (Issa Rae) is inspired while recruiting at a job fair with Frieda (Lisa Joyce). Later, she treats Daniel (Y’lan Noel) to a thank-you dinner as she remains hopeful about their future. Molly (Yvonne Orji) starts her dream job at a black-owned law firm."

“Backwards-Like” is a very fitting title for this episode. Issa and Molly are both regressing in their relationships and work. Issa is slowly returning back to familiar, comfortable habits with Daniel.  Molly is stepping away from her old job, where she had some seniority to being the newbie at an all Black firm, where she doesn’t stick out as much among a sea of rockstar Black attorneys.

Neither of these “steps-back” has to be an inherently bad thing. Molly can use her new-ness at her job to make her career path what she wants it to be, even if she does get off to a rough start. Issa can keep her neck and her back from hurting while sharing a bed with Daniel and still exercise self-control (read: not sleep with him) and work toward her goal of moving back out on her own. But it will require some maturity on the part of both of these women to really make these situations emotionally healthy and beneficial for them.

Issa is also still dealing with the fallout from her demotion at We Got Y’all but I am impressed with how she’s continued to try to do well at work and make the most of her position, even when she’s not on the field.

If nothing else, Issa has learned that complacency is a career-killer. However, ultimately, Issa will need to accept that We Got Y’all’s problematic model may be unsalvageable. The ultimate test (which probably won’t come for another few episodes) will be whether she has the strength to walk away.
