9. “Be the last.”

Introduced in the last season whilst our characters were trapped in the bunker, “Be the last” was Octavia’s way of initiating the start of the fight for freedom between criminals, whilst the rest of WonKru made entertainment of it.

This announcement is spoken so directly in the same way a command would be spoken, suggesting Octavia orders people to fight and brings out the strength in them to survive, which could also imply she is training her people to be more powerful.

This represents Octavia’s frame of mind perfectly and signifies what she has learned through her own combat training and her victories. Like the Grounders, Octavia believes fear and cowardice is weakness. Whichever of the criminals doesn’t succeed in being the last survivor in the pit dishonors WonKru and goes against Octavia’s order.

This statement has become such a normal part of life in the bunker that when Gaia rebels and attempts to murder Octavia with a spear whilst in the fighting pit, Octavia calmly throws the weapon back down and states the phrase once again in a composed voice. This phrase is not just words, but another unchanging law that WonKru live and fight by.
