2018 – Black Panther
It was between two movies for the title of 2018’s most popular film and they’re both part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While Avengers: Infinity War was wildly popular, Black Panther changed the game while also remaining in theaters even after it was released on DVD.
The back story to T’Challa, the new king of Wakanda, the movie explored the world of Wakanda and the hidden gems there. Safe away from the world, T’Challa has to figure out where his place as king is while also trying to remain hidden from the world, as the other kings before him did.
Throughout the movie, he learns about what it means to be the Black Panther and learns of family he did not know he had. With his sister Shuri and Okoye, T’Challa is figuring out his place as the ruler of Wakanda. With the movie’s record-breaking box office numbers, some argue it is the reason a still confusing Oscar’s category popped up.
Black Panther was a long time coming and yet Ryan Cougler and the forces behind the film made it fun while still remaining true to the character.
