1980 – The Shining

Taking a glimpse into the warped mind of Stephen King, The Shining was terrifying and brought to life Jack Torrence. Portrayed by Jack Nicholson, the movie focuses on a writer who takes his family to a hotel in Oregon that does the opposite of “relax” him.

The hotel is seemingly trying to drive him insane with ghosts, creepy twins, blood pouring out of elevator doors and so much more. But with all of that, Jack is still trying to write his novel. Obviously, a bit demented, the movie is psychological and still regarded as one of the best movies out of the 20th century.

The Shining is a Stanley Kubrick movie, the third on the list, which is important to note. Also, this year was the release of Star Wars Episode V: Empire Strikes Back and Raging Bull, both classics in their own right as well. It was an important year for movies but still, The Shining was the most popular to come out and torment audiences the most.
