Molly’s going to work and Issa’s making it work on the season premiere of Insecure.
Sunday night marks the return of Insecure season 3. Though we’ll be missing our favorite “nice guy” (not really), Lawrence, Issa Rae has promised no shortage of fun times and laughter on the Emmy-nominated series.
A press release from SpoilerTv notes, “After her break-up with Lawrence, Issa tries to get her life back together, working hard to save and earn extra cash while crashing on Daniel’s couch — an arrangement that proves challenging, given their history.”
Molly is also featured in this episode as she starts a new gig at a Black-owned law firm but, according to SpoilerTV, “finds her confidence put to the test when she’s not automatically recognized as ‘the star.’”
The preview of the season gives the impression that this round of episodes will be a lot more Issa-centric than previous seasons have been. Aside from Molly, there doesn’t seem to be a ton of side plots, which is exciting. We’re finally seeing Issa start to develop in a dramatic way and I’m hoping that with the focus more squarely on her, that momentum will continue.
Given the scenes we saw in the trailer, I’m willing to give Issa and Daniel’s living arrangement the benefit of the doubt for the time being. Issa seems to be finally getting her life together and I have no doubt that she doesn’t want the messiness of sleeping with someone she’s not in a relationship with and also having to live with them. But because it’s Issa and Daniel, I’m 100 percent positive the peace won’t last long.
I’m really excited to see Molly’s storyline play out this season. We never saw any other Black lawyers at Molly’s previous job (apart from the one intern/associate). If Molly was the only Black woman at her firm, there was probably some prestige that came with that, whether it was spoken or unspoken. Even though she was underpaid and underappreciated, I’m sure she stood out more than she will now as one of many Black, talented lawyers.
Given that Molly was the driving force behind her job change, it’ll be interesting to see how she responds when things don’t immediately go her way. Will she rise to the challenge and prove her star power, or will her old self-sabotage habits kick-in and cause her to ruin a good thing before she gives it a chance?
