One month before Aquaman hits theaters, fans are going to have the opportunity to read a prequel that ties in with the movie, looking at who Arthur Curry is as a teen.

DC is looking to really get fans excited for the release of Aquaman in December. And this means that leading up to the movie’s premiere, a prequel novel is being released, according to Heroic Hollywood. While we know that this film is set to be an origin story of sorts, it seems that this prequel will really be diving into (pun certainly intended) who young Arthur Curry was before he eventually becomes Aquaman.

As we saw in the trailer for the movie, we are going to have the opportunity to see Arthur as a child, interacting with other children and even aquatic life in an aquarium. Even from the brief glimpse we saw in the trailer, it is clear that he is on the outside looking in when it comes to being with his peers.

Apparently in the prequel, Aquaman: Undertow, which is said to be in continuity with the rest of the DCEU and the movie itself, we will get to read about a teenage Arthur Curry. In the new novel, fans will get to learn about what Arthur’s life was like at 13 years old, as he continues to feel like a “social outcast unable to fit in with the rest of the surface world.” Essentially, he is going from an ostracized child, unable to connect with the children around him, to a teenage misfit.

Aquaman has long been seen as a character from two different worlds, with a destiny that will see him become the king of Atlantis. However, with not only Aquaman: Undertow, but also the DCEU movie itself, we will get to really see how Arthur Curry became the DC superhero many of us love.

Hopefully with the prequel novel, we get to see how growing up impacted Arthur’s abilities and self-control. Considering his powers are his birthright (and he is part human) one has to think there were probably some growing pains. And considering how volatile teenagers are without being the future king of Atlantis and the ability to commune with the sea, Aquaman: Undertow may end up being just as fascinating as the movie itself.

Fans of Aquaman and the DCEU can already pre-order the novel now through the publisher’s website ahead of its release on Nov. 6. And this gives us all plenty of time to study up on what a young Arthur Curry was like prior to the film’s premiere in theaters on Dec. 21.
