Magnum P.I. – CBS

What you’re watching: Yet another reboot of a beloved, classic show that will be almost impossible to replicate or top. Jay Hernandez is stepping into Tom Selleck’s too-big-to-fill shoes as Thomas Magnum, and he’s got a lot of work ahead of him. No matter how adorable and charming Hernandez is, it’s hard to imagine anyone but Selleck in the role.

The premise is identical to the original: Magnum is a playboy private eye, living on the lush private estate of famed writer Robin Masters. The tightly-wound Higgins runs the estate, except in the 2018 version, this famous role is played a female actress, Perdita Weeks.

What it will remind you of: Well, the original Magnum P.I., of course! It’s meant to rely on our memories of the CBS juggernaut. We doubt modern audiences will even remember the first run of the show, and it will just be another shoot-’em-up, fast cars and chases, and steamy sex scenes procedural.

Long-term potential: This show, much like it’s Hawaii-based crime of the week cousin, Hawaii Five-O, it will probably have a mediocre first season, and then ratings will peter out shortly into its second season. You can’t capture lightning in a bottle twice.
