Carrie and Big – Sex and the City

Their love story: I’ll admit it right here. I actively rooted against this very dysfunctional couple. Carrie Bradshaw kept coming back to this man, who didn’t even have a name, played by Chris Noth, no matter how terribly he treated her. He cheated on her, ignored her, gaslighted her, insulted her, and grand-gestured her out of her good sense.

We’re supposed to love him because he’s rich, but I could never get on board with this one. Every single time they broke up, I hoped it would stick. But alas, Carrie is the queen of self-sabotage.

Did they or didn’t they: They did, and then they didn’t, and they did again. By the end of the series, Carrie had once and for all fallen for one of his giant overtures and we were meant to understand they would live happily ever after. Then, along came the movie and he pulled a classic Big move and left her at the altar. He then woos her into forgiving him with a big closet and an expensive pair of shoes, and all is forgiven. She marries him in a white skirt suit (!!!) at town hall, and we’re all supposed to swoon. I didn’t.

How to watch it unfold: Like many HBO originals, you can catch the series on HBO Max. The movies are a bit of a different story…
