Seth and Summer – The O.C.

Their love story: Seth and Summer were an example of the attraction of opposites. As is often the case, Seth, nerdy and socially inexperienced, pined after the pretty, popular Summer. Although not designed to be the star of the show, Adam Brody’s Seth stole every scene with his wit and self-deprecating insight. Rachel Bilson played Summer with the same effervescence she brings to most of her roles. It took four seasons, three love triangles and a particularly well-timed Wonder Woman costume to finally convince Summer he was a contender.

Summer may have been late to the Seth party — the rest of us were already deeply in lust with him — but once she got there, they were adorable. Perhaps one of TV’s most beloved couples, watching them fall in and out of love was the highlight of the mid-aughts.

Did they or didn’t they: They did … eventually. They were together, mostly, for a good bit of the show, but their relationship was plagued with problems and breakups, staying true to the nighttime soap genre. In the season 4 finale, the show flashes forward, offering a glimpse at Seth and Summer’s wedding.

How to watch it unfold: All four seasons are available on HBO Max, but beware of season 3. Mischa Barton’s personal troubles began to seep into her character, Marissa, and the show had to kill her off late in the third season. It was mostly okay with Semmer ‘shippers because it left more room for their budding romance.
