GREY’S ANATOMY – (ABC/Richard Cartwright) /

Meredith and Derek – Grey’s Anatomy

Their love story: Even the most jaded of TV viewers must admit a beautiful love story when they see it. Even though it started out on rocky ground — let’s not forget Meredith was Derek’s mistress — it has become one of the most iconic and aspirational love stories on TV.

Everything was against these two. Derek was Meredith’s boss to begin with, and he was married when they met. Gross, yes, but he ultimately wound up leaving his wife for her after an impassioned (and now infamous) speech. In it, she pleads with him to “Pick me. Choose me. Love me.” Even after this, they had to suffer shootings, plane crashes, bombs, drownings, miscarriages, and finally and most tragically, a car accident.

Did they or didn’t they: They did … for a while. Never discount the power of an intense lead-up, because these two were so happy in the episodes before his death. I guess you can’t really call them “ending up together” if he dies and she goes on. However, they gave us our Mer and Der happy ending, even if we had to sob through his ultimate death.

How to watch it unfold: This show has been on for so long, it’s hard to remember a TV landscape without it. It’s become part of the fabric of our shared television experience, and it’s considered canon for nighttime dramas. If you want a lesson in how to put on a television drama, watch all episodes on Netflix.
