Buffy The Vampire Slayer, “Once More, with Feeling”

Come on, you know we had to include one musical episode on this list!

On this season 6 episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the people of Sunnydale can’t stop breaking into song and dance. It turns out that this is the doing of a demon that has come to town, and now the Scoobies have to find out how to stop it.

It all begins when Buffy realizes how boring her life has become as she starts singing about her troubles in the song “Going Through The Motions.” When she walks through the cemetery and fights off vampires as she usually does, she sings about how she feels like she’s just “going through the motions” and feels uninspired. Seeing an ensemble of demons singing and dancing is definitely a sight to see!

When Buffy meets up with the rest of the gang the next day, she finds out that they’ve all been singing instead of talking, too. They don’t think they’re in any immediate danger — who has ever died from the uncontrollable urge to sing? — but agree that it’s definitely annoying. Then they look outside and realize that it’s not just their gang who can’t stop singing, but the whole town.

Eventually, they start to realize that their songs aren’t just songs, but they’re actually bringing out their hidden feelings, like when Xander and Anya sing to each other about their annoyances and doubts about their upcoming nuptials in the song “I’ll Never Tell.” The demon who started all of this sends his minions after Dawn, Buffy’s sister, and plans on making her his bride after he takes her back to his dimension. Why is it always Dawn?

The Scoobies eventually get the demon to take away his singing curse and leave them alone, but what’s the fun in that? Maybe it’s annoying to sing out all your secret desires and insecurities, but imagine living in a world where it was always a musical? Okay, maybe that would get a little annoying after a while.
