The Simpsons, “Treehouse of Horror V”

This may be the only animated TV show on this list, and it’s a Halloween special, but that makes it even more fun to watch over and over!

Over the years, The Simpsons have become known for their annual Halloween specials, known as Treehouse of Horror. The episodes are usually comprised of shorts that parody popular horror movies or just put the Simpson family in scary, gory situations that they wouldn’t encounter in a regular episode. And in “Treehouse of Horror V,” the three short stories were The Shinning (a parody of The Shining, of course), Time and Punishment, and Nightmare Cafeteria.

The short story we are interested in the most for this article, though, is The Shinning, because it may just be one of the best Simpsons moments, and definitely one of the best Treehouse of Horror moments, ever.

The Simpsons are hired by Mr. Burns to be caretakers at his mansion for the winter, but he cuts out the cable and takes all the beer before leaving to make sure that they work hard at maintaining his home. You can already smell the trouble brewing, can’t you? Bart encounters Groundskeeper Willie while out in a corn maze, and that’s when Willie discovers Bart has mind-reading powers, which he calls his “shinning” (and when Bart asks if he means “shining” Willie quickly shuts him down because he doesn’t want to get sued).

Just like in the movie, Homer starts to go crazy, but in this case, it was because of the lack of beer and TV. When he goes down to the bar, the ghost of Moe the Bartender tells him he has to kill his family.

Marge goes looking for him, and then she looks at his typewriter because what he typed “will be a window into his madness.”  All that was typed is “Feelin’ fine.” But then the entire room is covered in what Homer is reeeeally thinking, “No beer and no TV make Homer go crazy.” What happens next is seriously one of the funniest Simpsons moments ever, because Homer’s face is priceless (check out the video above).
