25. Qo’noS (Star Trek)

As will quickly become obvious, the definition of any one “best” planet is going to differ widely from person to person. Do you want a planet that’s utterly relaxing? Exciting? Intellectually stimulating? Or, maybe you just want to visit a planet that’s all about the honor. Well, and bat’leths.

Qo’noS (pronounced “Kronos”) is the home planet of the Klingon people in the Star Trek universe. It’s also the base of their sprawling and generally antagonistic empire. Even if you haven’t encountered Klingons in a battle-ready setting – and who hasn’t? – you get the sense that they are spectacularly prickly. So, why visit their home planet?

First of all, if you’re a geologist or volcanologist, you’re in luck. Qo’noS is often described as a planet of caves with semi-dormant subterranean volcanoes. Plus, Klingons are monomaniacally focused on being good warriors. That means that a Klingon scientist could be so happy to see a friendly face that you’ll get a fascinating tour of the deadly volcano caves in no time. Just remember to bring, oh, all of your protective equipment.

Need to get in some exercise, too? Great, because not only are you on a planet that’s full of intimidating people who will likely chase you through the streets, but they love to work out. That is, assuming your idea of the perfect workout involves bladed weapons.

Meanwhile, the arts are surprisingly active on such a warlike planet. Just take a look around the Klingon capital, and you’ll likely see many a fine, fashionable vest. Perhaps your favorite aunt would like one for herself, too. While you’re at it, catch a performance of some Klingon opera before you head off the planet. Hope you like chanting!
