Jason Momoa and Amber Heard reveal details from unique Aquaman set

Jason Momoa and Amber Heard discuss Aquaman from the movie’s set, but it isn’t the aquatic setting we were expecting to find them in.

The Aquaman solo movie is looking to be a film of epic proportions, as we’ve already seen thanks to images of the Fisherman King’s kingdom and Jason Momoa doing his thing underwater in this poster. Not only is the imagery grand and vibrant, but it showcases scenes that one can only imagine for a world found under the sea.

While filming for the movie, Jason Momoa who plays the titular hero, and Amber Heard, who plays the warrior Mera, spoke with Coming Soon about their time on set. They also shared reasons for taking the roles. However, the scene they are currently filming is far removed from the majestic underwater images we have been seeing.

Comin Soon visited the two as they worked in a sound stage in Australia, standing in a barren temple. In the film, this will transform into the Saharra Desert, which doesn’t make sense for our aquatic heroes. Entertainment Weekly has a preview of their desert location (along with an epic sea dragon, to appear later of course).

Heard and Momoa’s characters are on a quest to find “the King’s Trident.” Why would such a trident be located in the middle of the Sahara Desert? It all stems from where it was created.

Considering director James Wan has compared Aquaman to an Indiana Jones adventure, it makes sense the scene we’re learning about is far-removed from the underwater beauty we expect to see.

As Amber Heard explained, that was one of the things that drew her to the script. She explained that the script “didn’t sacrifice one element in order to achieve the other.” The actress even described Aquaman as being as much an adventure movie, as it is a superhero film, as it as a romantic comedy at times. Plus, with a master of horror directing the film, Heard felt that there were so many more elements to the movie than anyone might have imagined.

While Momoa has the leading role, Amber Heard easily seems to hold her own against the hero. She is not a damsel in distress, and is instead a fierce warrior. According to the actress, Aquaman isn’t saving her and the world, but rather she gets to save him.

For Momoa, the character is more than being a loner like Batman. He is an outsider, yes, but he has to learn to embrace his destiny, and that includes his future as king. Momoa also thinks that unlike Batman or even Superman, you could still sit down and have a drink with Aquaman.

"You can’t sit down and have a beer with Superman, you know what I mean? You can’t… I wanted Aquaman blue collar. He’s raised with his dad, worked on bikes, worked on old cars with his father and at a certain age he’s given this gift. He doesn’t know how to deal with it."

Momoa and Heard know that when it comes to film, sure, many things have been done before. But they believe in their film and the work they’ve put into it.

As for Jason Momoa, the thing that makes Aquaman different is well, him.
