Bing Bong says goodbye – Inside Out

This scene is one of the saddest moments from Inside Out, and this movie is about emotions, so that is pretty sad. Joy and Bing Bong, Riley’s old imaginary friend, have fallen into the Memory Dump, a place where old memories go and are eventually forgotten.

As one of Riley’s emotions, Riley cannot lose Joy, especially since she is essential to Riley being happy. All hope seems lost, and viewers are most likely crying their eyes out until Joy remembers Bing Bong’s flying wagon. They find the wagon in the Memory Dump, but when it can only carry one up into the active world of memory making, Bing Bong makes a sacrifice.

Sometimes we have to make sacrifices for those we care about, and that’s a value most of us understand. Bing Bong sacrifices himself for Riley so that she can have her Joy back.

And while it is the right thing for him to do, that does not change the fact that it is incredibly sad to watch him go. The scene even ends with Joy, who is meant to be happy all the time (something she discovers throughout the film is not possible), mourning her late friend.
