Game of Thrones season 8: Keep your eyes on Gendry

Just because the focus is on the main characters on Game of Thrones doesn’t mean that you can’t have some ideas about more minor characters.

Even characters who seem relatively minor can change the course of Game of Thrones. Sansa starts the show out as a whiny teen in love with Joffrey, and now look at her! In season 7 alone, she actually has Littlefinger executed in front of her. But we’re not talking about Sansa today. No, we’re talking about Gendry Waters, who shows up with a warhammer and the skills to use it in season 7.

Esquire UK notes that he’s now said he spent quite a bit of time working on season 8 of the show. It rightly adds that fans shouldn’t draw too many conclusions other than that he’s somehow important.

Here’s the thing, though. We’re going to discuss some spoilers here, so consider yourself warned.

We know Gendry has joined up with the northern faction of Team Targaryen (since Jon’s switched sides). As a result, he probably makes it back to Winterfell after ending season 7 at Eastwatch. We also strongly suspect that there’s a fight to be had at Winterfell, one that took quite some time to film if spoilers are correct.

Granted, that doesn’t completely justify how much work Dempsie seems to have done, much like how Esquire UK can’t square it either. It would, however, at least start to explain what he’s been doing all this time. After all, a big fight scene like that requires a lot of work both in training and shooting — especially if your character’s weapon of choice is also, as previously noted, a warhammer. (Granted, he leaves it behind beyond the Wall, but the Hound didn’t die, so presumably, he gets it back or just forges a new one.)

Either way, we suspect that he’ll probably get to feature both with Arya and in battle in season 8, and hopefully both. We’ll take all the Gendry we can get, honestly.
