11. Valentine Morgenstern from Shadowhunters

Whether you’re looking at Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter Chronicles or Freeform’s Shadowhunters, Valentine is a great example of a less than great father. For starters, he injected his own son with demon blood as an infant. After those experiments, it’s hard to be shocked that Jonathan turned into a murderous sociopath.

While Clary escaped a childhood with Valentine, he hasn’t done much to make his daughter’s life easier. He kidnaps her mother, attacks her and her friends, and even lies to her about her relationship with Jace.

On the subject of Jace, Valentine isn’t even good at pretending to be a father. He tried with Jace for a while, but this relationship didn’t fare any better than the ones with his actual children. It left the boy lost and confused, and it taught him that love is something to be feared.

Talk about your children being better off without you.

12. Martin Brenner from Stranger Things

Martin Brenner isn’t actually anyone’s father, but he does convince his test subjects to call him “Papa.” If you’ve watched Stranger Things, you know how little he deserves the title. He imprisons and traumatizes all of the children who call him this, Eleven included.

It’s sickening to see how Brenner treats children who want so badly to trust in him. But at least he gets his comeuppance in the end. Eleven ends up with Hopper as a father figure, a total win for her.
