7. Glow

The rundown: The Netflix series is a loose retelling of the women of professional wrestling of the 1980s. The Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling (G.L.O.W) aired from 1986 until the early ’90s, and this drama chronicles the real-life stars of the program.

It stars Alison Brie as an aspiring actress who stumbles on the audition after she answers an ad. She’s a try hard who is determined to make her “character work.” Her frenemy, played by Betty Gilpin also gets roped into being a part of the production and much of the tension is a competition between the women, fueled by their prior relationship.

Why it’s summer fun: Everything is fun about this show. The costumes are priceless, the music is a delight, and the wrestling is far more than just some narrative gimmick. It’s the fabric of the show and the community through which we get to know them. Much like A League of Their Own had baseball and Orange Is The New Black has a prison, Glow has wrestling.

The show is chocked full of interesting female characters who are playing really interesting characters in the ring. Each woman takes on a persona, and it’s fun to watch their stories play out in and out fo the ring.

How to watch: Glow is a Netflix original so you can binge the whole first season anytime you want before the second season premieres later this month.
