“Call Me Mother” by RuPaul

We started this playlist with a RuPaul song, so why not finish off strong?

“Call Me Mother” is a newer track from the drag icon, but it has certainly taken fans by storm. It sounded unlike Ru’s other songs; it was more rap than pop, and it was absolutely epic. Ru is rapping a mile a minute, and the beat gives us plenty of opportunities for death drops and jump splits (y’know, if we were actually able to do those things).

The moment we know this song was big was when it made it onto So You Think You Can Dance. On season 14 of the reality show, Dance alum (and former Lady Gaga dancer) Mark Kanemura choreographed an opening number to the instant club classic, and it went viral. It’s not like SYTYCD was the peak of masculinity or gender stereotypes before, but to see a song by a drag queen being performed by a group of dancers who were voguing, duck walking, throwing flower petals (very Sasha Velour) on an American television show on Fox was insane.

This song was made for the clubs, literally. Even though Ru probably hasn’t stepped foot in a club in years, at least not as a patron, he knew exactly what the gays wanted. He gave them that and more. This is the kind of track that makes everyone feel like the fiercest, most sickening bitch on the dance floor, no matter who they are.

Hopefully, we’ve helped you come up with some ideas for your own Pride playlists, but if you disagree with our choices, well… you’re on your own!
