Suicide Squad 2 is also still in development, complicating things further
The situation at DC and Warner Bros. when it comes to the state of the DC Extended Universe is bonkers, and the Suicide Squad 2 news only underscores that.
This is a serious series of questions: How many movies do DC Comics and Warner Bros. currently have in development for the DC Extended Universe? Which of those movies have actually moved forward or have officially been greenlit? Is there something actually resembling a plan over there? Because based on the news that Suicide Squad 2 has new writers, this writer is not sure the answers to the above questions are particularly positive ones.
It really isn’t about Suicide Squad 2, at the heart of it all. In fact, this writer has been wrestling with how things seem to roll over at DC and Warner Bros. for more than a year. Earlier this week, there were new reports saying that a Joker movie was also still in the works. The word that comes to mind is, well, scattershot, which does actually sound like a superhero name, so it’s fitting. (Hey, Shatterstar is in Deadpool 2. And, of course, there’s Deadshot in the DC universe.)
This isn’t to say that movie universes shouldn’t have multiple projects going at any one time. Both internal and external demands practically require it. What seems to be the problem here is that Warner Bros. and DC are more than happy to announce things way, way too early, and it means that there’s just too much to keep up with.
The Hollywood Reporter, linked above, puts it mildly with its note about “multiple projects … with Suicide Squad characters,” but that’s just the tip of the apparently very large iceberg. Remember the Nightwing movie? How about Batgirl? Or The Flash? Or Cyborg? We could keep going here.

At some point, DC and Warner Bros. might have to just sit down and figure out a more coherent strategy, or risk further damaging the goodwill they have.
