Anchors Away (Season 5, Episode 1)

Sex and The City may focus a lot on, well, sex, but one of the most important characters in the series is, in fact, The City. Carrie and her best friends are all New York City girls, and it shows throughout the series and the movies.

Miranda struggles with a move to Brooklyn, Samantha loses her sense of self when she moves to L.A., and Carrie can’t even handle a weekend in a cabin. And in this season 5 episode, it was a special ode to the city they all love so much, and for a good reason.

You may not know this, but “Anchors Away” was the first episode of Sex and The City aired after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The episode may have only aired that following summer, but the city was still reeling from the traumatic events that took place, and the show even took a shot of the Twin Towers out of the opening credits.

To celebrate the city, this episode took place during Fleet Week, a very New York event when Navy boys swarm the city and the women swoon for them. The women (excluding new mother Miranda) get invited to a Fleet Week party, and how could they possibly say no?

Charlotte put the idea in Carrie’s head that we only get two great loves in our lives. Carrie asks a handsome sailor named Louis what he thinks, and Carrie doesn’t like what she hears — especially when this guy tries to drag New York City!

Carrie decides that she doesn’t need a man that night and heads home alone because she already has her soulmate. “If Louis was right and you only get one great love, New York may just be mine. And I can’t have nobody talking sh*t about my boyfriend.”
