While a lot of people have mixed feelings on Solo: A Star Wars Story, we’re going to focus on some of the aspects that the movie got right for fans.
Solo: A Star Wars Story isn’t exactly the most highly anticipated film in the franchise. So while a lot of fans have their issues with the film, we’re going to focus on what the movie does right by the character. Because yes, while there are some parts that were just fine, the movie has a lot that works.
First of all, the movie nails the idea that Han Solo is a bit of a bumbling idiot. While he may be the greatest pilot in the galaxy, sometimes Han is a bit — ah, how shall we say — dense? It is something that came about in the original trilogy and this movie does a great job of continuing the narrative.
Sure, many of his companions — like Chewie — give him credit for his courage. But still, this version of Solo sometimes just doesn’t understand what’s going on.
Second, Lando. Really, everything to do with Lando Calrissian was perfect. He just wanted to cheat people out of money to buy more capes and fly around the galaxy.
This man right here? Oh, he’s a man who knows what he wants and doesn’t care who he hurts. We have to respect that, and we definitely respect the way Solo portrayed Lando (really, big thanks to Donald Glover).
But most importantly? This movie understands the connection between Han and Chewie. Han saves Chewie while he is a soldier, thus Chewie owes Han a life debt. We, as fans, know that dynamic. But this movie never explains that to Han.
We hope that Han truly thinks Chewie just really likes him and Chewbacca is actually there because he owes a life debt to Han. Not to say the two aren’t best friends — they are. We just think that’s a funnier dynamic.
And after all, who’s funnier than Han Solo and Chewbacca?
Next: We need a female-led standalone from the Star Wars series (and we’ve got recs)
You can see Solo: A Star Wars Story in theaters now and honestly? This is one movie that you don’t want to miss.
