Sneaky Pete
Although Sneaky Pete is a unique contribution to the “peak television” genre, it has an appeal for lots of viewers. Much like Riverdale, it seems like it’s going to be one thing, but the more you watch, the more the show reveals.
The premise: Ex-con and talented grifter Marius steals the identity of his former cellmate, Pete. Marius returns to Pete’s hometown in an attempt to dodge his pre-prison debts, pretending to be their long lost cousin Pete. He uses the stories and anecdotes he heard from the real Pete to blend into the Bernhardt family.
At first, Marius does okay since the real Pete has been estranged from the family for years and years. As time wears on, things get more complicated as he learns the family has secrets of their own.
He also has to balance his old life with the new one, and each one begins to creep into the other. Even more complex, Marius bonds with the family, and he starts to develop feelings for his “cousin.”
Why you’ll like it: Sneaky Pete seamlessly blends the intrigue of Pete’s nefarious past with the story of the family. As viewers, we are equally invested in the heist part of the story as we are about watching Pete become part of the Berhardt family. We are rooting for Marius to become Pete, even though it defies logic and reason. Similar to Riverdale, it positions its protagonist as a not-so-great guy, yet we’re still definitely on his side.
Where to find it: Both seasons of the Amazon original are free with your Amazon Prime subscription, and I dare you not to fall in love with Giovanni Ribisi.
