With Captain Marvel set years before the first Iron Man movie, we’ll get a look at S.H.I.E.L.D. and an Agent Coulson who’s just getting started, according to Clark Gregg.
Captain Marvel is going to be one long throwback Thursday movie, and we’ll even see a little #TBT action from our very favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Phil Coulson, too.
Never fear that Coulson’s involvements in the movie might interfere with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. the TV show, since this movie takes place in the ’90s. That means we’ll get to see a young Phil Coulson who’s just getting his feet wet with the secret organization.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about his character, Gregg said: “He’s a bit of a new guy in S.H.I.E.L.D. He’s a lot younger. It’s the earliest we will have seen him, so when he says, ‘Mr. Stark, this isn’t my first rodeo’ in Iron Man, this is maybe the rodeo he’s talking about.”
Gregg will be joining a young Nick Fury to team up with Carol Danvers (Captain Marvel) as they get caught up in one big alien war. It’d be nice to see a bit of character development from him, seeing as this could be his very first bout with the extraterrestrial. We’re guessing this young Coulson won’t be as chill as he was when he first found Thor’s hammer in New Mexico, and dealt with Loki on the helicarrier.
That being said, the 2019 movie probably won’t help us to figure out what’s next for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. after Thanos’ attack, or even make a mention of what’s happened on the show so far.
The relationship between the MCU movies and TV shows is pretty one-sided. While the shows go on and continue to feed from the Marvel movies, the movies themselves wouldn’t touch TV show plots with a 10-foot pole. Marvel Studios is like that one ex who you’ll never forget about. They’ve forgotten about you, but somehow your life just can’t go on without them.

While Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 is wrapping up, the next season won’t return until summer 2019. At least we’ll get to see Coulson and S.H.I.E.L.D. before that when Captain Marvel hits theaters in March 2019.
