Ryan Reynolds discusses the future of Deadpool and it doesn’t sound good at this point

Ryan Reynolds talks about the future of the Deadpool franchise and X-Force, says he doesn’t see Deadpool 3 happening at this point.

The Deadpool hype is building once again, as the sequel to the hit movie arrives in theaters on May 18, 2018. With all of the attention being split between the newest MCU movie, Avengers: Infinity War, and the upcoming Deadpool 2, Ryan Reynolds has started to make media rounds. Reynolds has opened up about the new film plus what’s next for Deadpool.

The current projections for Deadpool 2 have the movie tracking with an opening weekend haul of at least $150 million. One would think that a third film would almost be a guarantee. Except it sounds like that may not be the case, according an recent interview Reynolds did with Entertainment Weekly.

The actor said that he does not really see a Deadpool 3 happening without having the film take “everything away from him.” But this is not something he believes should happen again. However, Reynolds does see a future in which Deadpool is, of course, a part of the X-Force team.

Reynolds feels there are only two ways to do justice to his vigilante character. The first would be to have Deadpool in a team-up movie. The other option? Make a film that gets the “budget down to nothing and just swing for the fences, and break all kinds of weird barriers, and do stuff that no one else can do.”

At this point, there is no guarantee that there will be a Deadpool 3 in our futures. But that does not mean this would be the last we see of the Merc with a Mouth, as he is expected to be a part of the upcoming X-Force movies.

Now, another reason as to why the future is unclear comes from the fact that Disney is going to be the new home of the X-Men and Deadpool. As Forbes reported, while the MCU is under the Disney umbrella as well, their “main objective” is still centered around the sale of toys to children, whereas both Deadpool and the X-Force are much darker and grittier.

In the first Deadpool movie, the sex, swearing, and outright ridiculousness were vital to the film’s success. There was something fresh and invigorating about an anti-hero who could break the fourth wall and make fun of not only himself, but everyone else. Based on the trailers for the sequel, it looks we will be getting a lot more of what made the first movie such a success.

While all the dirtiness of Deadpool is integral to its brand, its not the kind of stuff Disney or the MCU are known for. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why even Reynolds can’t picture a third movie at this point. The House of Mouse is now going to be the House of Deadpool, too.

If Reynolds believes that a third film is only possible by going for more of a “Sundance” type feel, as he mentioned in the interview, then perhaps there’s still hope for Deadpool adventures (even if the future seems uncertain with the Disney acquisition in process). For now though, at least we have Deadpool 2 to look forward to, as well as the potential formation of the X-Force.
