Janine

Finally, there’s Janine. Janine has a special protection as a woman known to be fertile, but Gilead also proved they don’t care much about that now that she’s served the purpose of giving birth to a child. After throwing herself from a bridge in the penultimate episode of the season, Janine was rescued, only to be executed…or so we thought. The Handmaids banded together to defy Aunt Lydia and refuse to kill one of their own, winning Janine her life…for now. It’s Gilead, remember? What’s to stop them from carting her off and killing her in some other awful way?

Nothing, really, but the modicum of power Aunt Lydia wields, and the fact that it would make a terrible plot point. Something else is probably in store for Janine, and that something else looks like the Colonies, too. In one of the Season 2 trailers, we see Janine briefly looking out over workers in a desolate area. Seems like she and Emily are headed to the same place.

Janine has always been one to look as much on the bright side as one can in Gilead, which makes me wonder how much of a help she could be to Emily if, indeed, Emily opts to fight back from where she is. But should the two band together, they could be a forced to be reckoned with. Janine has a baby back in Gilead that she wants to protect and perhaps even save. That could be the catalyst for her to fight back in a new way.

The Handmaid’s Tale season 2 premieres on Hulu on April 25 with the first two episodes, and a new episode will appear every Wednesday after that for 13 episodes total. You can watch the entirety of season 1 now if you need to get caught up.
