The Evil Dead (1981) – Horrible filming conditions left cast members sick, smelly and freezing
If you ever find yourself in a secluded cabin in the woods and happen to find a strange book with words you can’t understand scribbled in it, along with a tape of incantations, it’s probably best to leave. But in the case of The Evil Dead the characters obviously weren’t smart enough for that, and thank goodness for that, because now we have a classic gorefest to enjoy!
The Evil Dead is about a group of college students who embark on a relaxing vacation in a remote cabin in the woods (that was their first mistake). When they get there, they notice some strange sounds, but don’t think anything of it. After finding a suspicious book and a tape in the basement, they inadvertently let out a powerfully evil force that tries to possess and kill them all.
The movie wasn’t filmed on some glamorous movie set, or even in a nice cabin in the woods. It was filmed in a legit abandoned cabin! The cabin was also used to lodge 13 crew members throughout the shoot, which obviously caused tension.
Actors had to go days without showering because the cabin didn’t have plumbing, and since there was no heating, they frequently got sick due to the freezing conditions. By the end of the production, they found themselves burning furniture just to stay warm.
After they finished shooting, the cast and crew put together a time capsule as a memento of the production and buried it inside the cabin’s fireplace. The cabin has since been destroyed, but some lucky Evil Dead fans, who knew about the time capsule, discovered that the fireplace was still intact in the woods, and found it.
