The 2018 Tony Awards will be hosted by two Grammy-Award-winning and Tony- nominated performers: Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban. Was the choice a smart one?
The 2018 Tony Awards will soon be here. Theater fans tune in to watch the annual Tony Awards every June. This year’s award show will be hosted by two popular, yet non-controversial, performers to handle hosting duties. This year’s award show hosts will be Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban. Did the Tony committee choose wisely?
An award show host is a difficult job. At the Tony Awards, the job is even more difficult because the host needs to sing, dance, be humorous and keep the show moving. Throwing Bareilles and Groban into hosting duties is a bold move.
Bareilles has won Grammys for her pop songs. Most recently, she wrote and starred in Waitress on Broadway. Groban is also a Grammy winner and most recently made his Broadway debut in Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812.
While we know that both performers have great stage presence and beautiful voices, hosting duties can be more difficult. Groban has co-hosted Live with Kelly for a few episodes, which could be helpful.
Truthfully, as long as the opening number is upbeat and entertaining, the show should be well received. Last year’s Tony host would surely like to be forgotten by the theater community.
Even though the hosts are important to the Tony broadcast, theater fans are more interested in the winning musicals and plays. This Broadway season has seen some popular characters come to the stage. The highly theatrical production of SpongeBob SquarePants has brought a breath of fresh air to the theater world. A huge, colorful production, the musical has surprised many people.
Another highly anticipated production was Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. Harry Potter fans have always wondered what happened to the beloved wizard and his world. This production should be nominated for many Tony awards.
Other popular choices for nominations are the musical adaption of Mean Girls, the revival of Angels in America and the revival of Carousel. Of course, every season has a few productions missed. It seems that Frozen may not be on the top of the critics must see list.
Next: After 20 years, The Lion King still rules the stage
The 72nd Annual Tony Awards will air on Sunday, June 10 on CBS at 8 p.m. EST. Nominations for this year’s Tony Awards will be announced May 1.
