Dazed and Confused – Real-life inspirations filed a lawsuit

Dazed and Confused is very similar to a movie like Can’t Hardly Wait, but set in the 1970s. It’s the last day of school, and the new seniors are ready to haze the incoming freshman before they start off the final summers of their high school lives.

Of course, the night ends with a big kegger out in a field. The original plan was foiled when the party’s host accidentally outed the party plans to his parents, all thanks to a keg delivery that showed up too early.

The movie seemed like a pretty realistic portrayal of teens in the 1970s, but unfortunately, that was part of the problem. The movie was too realistic because it was inspired by director Richard Linklater’s real teenage experience, including some of his real friends.

In 2004, 11 years after the film’s released, three former classmates, Bobby Wooderson, Andy Slater, and Richard Floyd, filed a lawsuit against Universal Studios, citing the fact that Linklater did not get their permission to use their likeness or surnames in the film. The three men, who lived in Huntsville, Texas, claimed they faced ridicule because of it.

Unfortunately for them, due to the statute of limitation, the lawsuit was eventually dismissed.

Speaking of Wooderson, his movie counterpart, played by Matthew McConaughey, was seen in the film as being the kind of pervy older guy who still hung out with the high schoolers and scammed on the young girls. Funny enough, in real life, he was younger than several of the actors playing high school students. Sasha Jenson, Joey Lauren Adams, and Parker Posey were all older than him at the time.
