Black Panther already has a Blu-ray release date and wow that was quick
By Mia Johnson
Even though it feels like Black Panther just came out in theaters, and it’s still showing, the high-grossing movie now has a date for its home release.
If you told me Black Panther hit theaters almost two months ago, I’d be certain that you were playing a practical joke on me. But it’s true! Now, you can watch the movie from the comfort of your own home starting next month.
On May 8, the movie will be available for digital download. The week after, on May 18, you can get the movie on Blu-ray.
As the announcements for the release date started rolling out, Lupita Nyong’o shared a photo of the movie’s Blu-ray cover on her Instagram account. The cover is cool and futuristic, using the same lineup of characters as the theatrical poster. There’s also a nice shot of Wakanda’s metropolis down below.
Even though the movie was released in February, and the home release is for May, why does it feel like this new release date is so quick?
First, it doesn’t hurt to recognize that Black Panther has been making headlines week after week to keep it relevant. First, it stayed on top of the box office, matching records like The Force Awakens’ and Jurassic World’s.
Then, it quickly became a cultural staple that found its way on TV and the internet. From funny SNL sketches on shows hosted by Sterling K. Brown and Chadwick Boseman himself to hilarious Twitter memes, the fans couldn’t get enough of the movie.
Although it was dethroned as the number one movie by Pacific Rim Uprising after a few weeks, the movie still broke records on a larger level than just the weekly box office. Just within the last week, it beat Frozen as the number four movie in the world. It quickly moved on to take the number three spot, beating Titanic.
To add to that, most movies, in general, are getting much quicker release dates. Now, according to Slate, movies are typically released three months after they hit theaters instead of six. Take the last Marvel movie to get a home release, Thor: Ragnarok, for example. The movie came out in November and was ready to be watched at home by March.

With a release date in May, that means we’ll have some time to restudy the movie after Infinity War comes out. There’s always important details in previous movies that you don’t catch until you see the newest one.
