Michael and Fredo Corleone – The Godfather  II

Don’t be the Fredo. Don’t ever, ever be the Fredo. He’s the worst, and it’s not solely because he anemically tried to have to brother murdered. He’s weak, mealy-mouthed, and dwarfed on both sides by his brothers.

Unlike the rest of us, Michael saw something in Fredo. He made him his underboss, even though the title didn’t really hold much power. Fredo was insecure and unsure of his place in his family, and he overcompensated for his brothers’ strength and charisma. His incompetence at handling his own business was the root of most of his feelings of inadequacy. He just could never muster the nerve to be anything more than his brothers’ limp lap dog.

Desperate to gain any semblance of power, he orchestrated the assassination of his brother Micheal, boss of the family. Just like so much of what Fredo attempted, the hit was foiled, but not before Michael figured it out. Michael confronts Fredo at a wedding, offering one of the most famous lines in movie history. “I know it was you, Fredo.”

Then he plants the kiss of death on him. Game over.
