6. Married to the Sea

Married to the Sea is another webcomic, this time co-created by husband and wife team Natalie Dee and Drew Fairweather. Together, they have taken on what many would consider a punishing schedule: one new comic, every single day. They’ve been operating as such since 2006, making this one of the longest continuously published comics on the list.

Each also has their own separate comics work. Dee creates her own self-titled daily comic, while Fairweather publishes Toothpaste for Dinner.

The pair has it a little easier than some artists, though. They use public domain images as the basis for their jokes. Most often, the images in question are taken from Victorian sources, making for some pretty interesting anachronisms. Ladies in corsets and men with terribly out of date facial hair are often seen referring to current events and modern-day advancements.

That doesn’t mean Married to the Sea is all social commentary, all the time. Sometimes, the gag for the day is simply an odd, but often pretty delightful, bit of strangeness.

Like any long-running comic, Married to the Sea has accumulated plenty of recurring jokes and running gags. There is a creepy mechanical rabbit of sorts that talks in all caps, as mechanical rabbits are wont to do. Also, lots of beards. So many beards.

With the modern-day sensibility, current events come into play. But neither Dee nor Fairweather seem too afraid of making fun of themselves or the form. They’ve put out a few good riffs on political cartoons with their collage-style format, including some standard tropes of that particular genre.
