Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD: Where does Deke fit into the current timeline?

In “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD,” we’re not so sure Deke was part of the original time loop. He might just be the one change that will save the world.

Time travel is always weird and sometimes it’s really hard to follow. Agents of SHIELD is doing its best with their current time loop, but they may only be a step or two away from a LOST-like scenario where Daniel Faraday’s own mother kills him in the past.

In this latest episode, everyone made it back to the present time — Deke included. Deke, who has never experienced the real world. Or fresh air. Outdoors, trees, endless skies, terrible beer…

We’ve seen flashbacks to this timeframe earlier in the season, when humanity fled to the Lighthouse. But we never saw Deke. That could have been clever editing so as to not include him, but it feels there’s more to it.

Maybe Deke is the first difference in the time loop. Maybe he’s the only change that makes a difference.

He makes Daisy leave the safe haven of the Lighthouse to come rescue him from the local precinct. Maybe that means Daisy left earlier than she was supposed to. Perhaps in the last set of the time loop, she was there when Yo-Yo’s arms were cut off and even more hell broke loose.

Because if she had been there when Ruby showed up, Ruby probably would have gone into overdrive trying to capture Daisy. That would have been the point where Daisy would have run away and flown off to destroy the world, according to those recordings.

Deke also has more of an idea of what happens in the past than the rest of our SHIELD compatriots. Even though they may be steeped in folklore and legendary tales, there’s still a nugget of truth somewhere in there. He could very well be in the heat of the action and see something from those tall tales.

It’s just enough to save a life and keep the course of action away from the world quaking apart.

Robin only mentioned needing Flint. But maybe they needed Flint in order to bring in Deke.
