3 things we want to see if this is Agents of SHIELD’s final season

If this is the last season of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, we have a few things we would really like to see before those closing credits roll.

Agents of SHIELD fans, we’ve been through so much since this show’s premiere. From losing droves of viewers to potential cancellation season after season to weak plot lines to holy crap that 180 in plotlines after “The Winter Soldier…” there are a lot of feels. Five seasons of feels.

Like I said, as every season’s end approaches, we brace ourselves for cancellation. We may never see Agent Coulson in action again. Pushing the show to a later timeslot last season and then pushing it to Fridays this season feels like doom and gloom, even if the show is as fantastic as ever.

So it should come as slight relief that the writers for Agents of SHIELD are writing this season’s finale as if it’s a series finale.

That’s a good thing, because you know the kind of cliffhangers this show throws at us. Imagine if season 4 had been its last season and we ended on that cliffhanger of Coulson in space. Could you really go on without knowing just how the heck he got there?!

With this potentially being Agents of SHIELD’s final run, we have some ideas/wishful thoughts about what we want to see before it ends.

A cameo from a Netflix character

Look, we all know 10 years into the Marvel Cinematic Universe that Iron Man isn’t going to show up to wonder why Coulson is alive, poking him with sharp objects to make sure he’s not an LMD. We haven’t seen Nick Fury on the show since season 2 (and not in a film since Avengers: Age of Ultron). Sure, we had Maria Hill in season one and Lady Sif a couple of times.

But there was never a random Hawkeye appearance or phone call with Natasha Romanoff. And none of the characters have appeared in a film since Coulson’s death in The Avengers. Not even when Darren Cross introduced some “heads of Hydra” in Ant-Man and you totally could have had Grant Ward standing there and it wouldn’t have mattered if you knew him or not! I digress…

How hard is it to have one of the Netflix characters show up? It doesn’t even need to tie in to their shows!

Just imagine Daisy and May running into Jessica Jones on the streets of New York. Or Coulson getting into some hot water and having Foggy bail him out with his lawyer-y ways.

Make it as hilarious as you want: May’s knee goes out on her again and they happen to run into Claire Temple on the street, who can’t believe her luck. Mack accidentally running into Matt Murdock on a street corner and immediately feeling guilty and trying to buy him a slice of pie at a local diner.

Or, you know, May kicking Danny Rand’s butt, even with the Iron Fist on his side. That one would be fun and cathartic.

Please, some sort of crossover with any amount of these characters before that final episode hits.

A return of Peggy Carter

Remember when Agents of SHIELD’s midseason hiatus was full of Marvel’s Agent Carter? Hayley Atwell graced our screens for six to eight weeks in the dead of winter and it was glorious. We saw the beginnings of Roxxon Corporation and Howard Stark in all his glory.

Plus Jarvis’ shenanigans. (Hey, he listens to Benny Goodman’s nighttime show. He’s awesome.)

And if we’re going to break out of this time loop and deal with the looming Thanos threat (the latter being wishful thinking), maybe we need to go back a little more than just the present day.

Okay maybe that’s not so feasible. What about something similar to what they did in season 2/3? They find an old, forgotten SHIELD facility, completely off the map, and stumble upon some of Peggy’s old files and film reels?

Atwell did so much as Peggy in every appearance that directors wrote specific scenes into movies just to include her (see: Steve’s dream sequence in Age of Ultron, the beginning of Ant-Man). Why can’t she shine one last time where her character really bloomed and grew into much more than just Captain America’s girlfriend?

Plus it would give us one last time of watching Simmons fangirl over Peggy.

Ghost Rider’s return

This one might actually happen. If you remember the season 4 finale, Coulson made a deal with the Ghost Rider to help take down Aida, and we still don’t know its consequences.

Robbie Reyes was a fantastic new character who breathed new life into the show. (It also helped they changed up the season’s formats and didn’t have overarching storylines, keeping them truncated.) He popped back up in the season 4 finale, and it was one of the most fun things I’ve ever seen on this show.

But he needs to come back. Can Ghost Rider actually let the world explode like it did? And in that same vein … will the Spirit of Vengeance let Coulson die before finishing his end of their deal?

That being said, I’m about 95% sure we’ll see Robbie Reyes before this season ends.

What if the time loop the captured Elena is in didn’t include Robbie in their past? We’ve talked multiverses a few different times this season; it’s not that farfetched. Maybe this time around, now that they have Flint, they also have Ghost Rider to step in and save Coulson. It’s one less thing to worry about before Daisy quakes apart the world!

As long as Agents of SHIELD doesn’t end on a cliffhanger, I think we’ll be okay with whatever they decide. No matter what, it will definitely be a bittersweet farewell.
