Game of Thrones season 8: Liam Cunningham actually keeps mum(ish)

It’s not often that Liam Cunningham doesn’t have any new tidbits for fans wondering about Game of Thrones season 8, but these quotes are still intriguing.

Liam Cunningham has definitely read all of the Game of Thrones season 8 scripts. He told RTÉ Entertainment so. Of course, he also has a pretty good reason to not actually tell the media what’s going on in the show. He said, “I’d get shot!”

Fortunately for him, although not so fortunately for us, he didn’t say anything that might qualify as a heavy Game of Thrones spoiler. He did mention that he agrees with George R.R. Martin’s description of the ending as “bittersweet,” though.

When it comes to that kind of word, we have to expect some deaths. Thus far in the offseason, we’ve guessed that someone like Arya Stark or Daenerys Targaryen might die. Davos Seaworth himself isn’t even safe! From Cunningham’s perspective, his not having the chance to star or feature in all six episodes would be “bittersweet.”

(Yes, even if he gets a moving death scene or something.)

But where would the sweetness come from? It might just be as simple as the Night King being defeated, but with spoilers showing lots of fire being thrown around, even that victory would come with a bitter side as well. Something purely sweet might just be letting someone like Sansa survive and take control of Winterfell once and for all.

Admittedly, isn’t Game of Thrones‘ stock in trade. However, that doesn’t mean it’s never done a hopeful scene. The ending would be the perfect chance for something positive.

Where we do agree completely with Cunningham, though, is in his assessment that the show has to come to an end. Speaking for apparently the entire cast and crew, he said, “We want to do like The Beatles or The Jam and get out at the top of it and get out before everyone hates us.”

Of course, it’d be nice to have more Game of Thrones, but that’s what the spinoffs are for, right?
