Netflix’s The Innocents: 3 guesses for the storyline

There’s not much to go on when it comes to Netflix’s The Innocents, but that won’t stop us from throwing out three ideas for the series.

Apparently not satisfied with series like 13 Reasons Why when it comes to the teen audience (and older viewers who still enjoy teen dramas)? Netflix is now starting to promote The Innocents. As Entertainment Weekly writes, the series seems to have a paranormal bent, even though there’s not anything even remotely resembling official confirmation aside from the plot that these two teens by the names of June and Harry abscond because their families have issues with their being together.

That’s a pretty basic story, so let’s get right to some possibilities.

Vampires and werewolves

No, we don’t mean that this will be an attempt at an edgierTwilight (not that that was hard … at least until Breaking Dawn showed up and made everything weirder than it already was). We’re saying that it’s possible our two main characters, also known as the ones who run away together, are a vampire (or a dhampir, perhaps) and a werewolf. EW alludes to there being “secrets their parents never told them,” and “surprise, you’re a werewolf” seems to be a pretty big thing.

Ancient feuds

Forbidden love based on familial conflict has been a common idea in fiction since forever, basically. (Yeah, Romeo and Juliet is not something Shakespeare came up with one day in London. See? Even talking about Netflix can be educational.) Maybe only one half of our central couple is actually not completely human, and the other half comes from a family destined to be hunters. The feud may have died down in recent generations, but family memories last a long time.

A mirror realm

EW also points out that mirrors feature prominently — covering peoples’ eyes, showing brief glimpses of what looks like a red-and-white tiled floor, and so on. Perhaps the “living in secret” mentioned when the note appears has to do with either Harry or June being able to access a second world through mirrors? It might be a touch too complex for this series. However, Netflix hasn’t shied away from that as of late with series like Altered Carbon. Additionally, although The Innocents skews more paranormal, the similarities to Stranger Things might actually make it easier to market.
