John Krasinski is open to The Office revival – but are we?

If the rumors that NBC are planning an revival of The Office weren’t enough, given that precisely nobody asked for it, they have also failed to tell the series’ most beloved cast member about the plans.

“Guess who didn’t get a call? Me,” John Krasinski told Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show.

Krasinski played Jim Halpert in all nine seasons of The Office, from 2005 to 2013. Over the series, viewers watched Jim as he went from being in unrequited love with receptionist Pam, to being her boyfriend and then her husband, and it is arguably one of the greatest, softest love stories of all time. Full disclosure — I once swiped right on Tinder just because a boy said Jim Halpert was his role model.

So NBC better not be thinking of leaving Jim out, especially since Krasinski sounds like he’d be on board to come back, if he was asked.

“Are you kidding? I’d love to get that gang back together,” Krasinski told Ellen.

Reboot or revival?

The gang’s return all depends definitively on whether or not the new series would be a reboot, as The Hollywood Reporter states, or a revival, as The Hollywood Reporter also states. This is our petty way of asking for clarity, because reboot and revival are not interchangeable. A reboot would discard the original cast, but a revival could carry on their story. The lack of definition is stressing us, and John Krasinski, out.

We also need to question whether we would even want another series of The Office if the original cast isn’t invited. The answer, for us, is a resounding no. Without the usual cast of misfits, is it even The Office anymore? There’s a reason looking into the camera like Jim from The Office is a meme. Jim is a cultural symbol and an icon. The Office without Jim is unimaginable.

The same goes for all our favorites — Pam, Dwight, Kelly, and basically any of the original series’ main cast. The Office worked because it’s an ensemble piece. We care about these characters, we’ve known them for years. We don’t want to make new Dunder Mifflin friends.

However, if the original cast are asked back, as seemed likely when rumors of the new series first surfaced in December, the answer is still no. The story is finished. It’s done. We all had a little cry when the last episode aired in 2013, but all good things must come to an end.

Plus we have to admit that the later seasons weren’t the best. We were lucky to get even nine seasons from the Scranton branch of Dunder Mifflin. It had to end and it had to do so before it became depressing — a formulaic show about people who didn’t want to be there.

The Office was an award-winning, trailblazing sitcom. The last thing it deserves is to become a show people watch only out of habit. You either wrap up a hero or air long enough to see yourself become the worst.

We get that it’s hard letting go. Jim Halpert is possibly the only man we’ll ever truly love, but at the moment, we have closure. Bringing him back would be like getting back with your first boyfriend only to find you’ve both changed and it’s not like how you remembered.

Not to sound like your mom on Facebook, but let’s not be sad it’s over, but grateful that it happened. And that we can watch it all over again on Netflix.

It must have been love, but it’s over now. Please.
