Wednesday Wag: Dogs around the world are trying the egg challenge
By Robin Lempel
After a Golden Retriever holding an egg in its mouth went viral, dogs everywhere are trying their hand at the egg challenge. And it’s amazing.
There’s a new viral challenge sweeping the Internet. No. It’s not the Tide Pod challenge or the ice bucket challenge. People are trying to see if their Golden Retrievers will hold eggs in their mouths. It’s crazy, and the egg challenge has some hilarious results.
So why Golden Retrievers? It seems so random. But apparently the breed has soft mouths. Golden Retrievers were bred to fetch game that hunters shot, so they had to be gentle so as not to damage the prey. Plus, Goldens are notoriously very, very good dogs who just want to please you. So now they can do the cutest trick ever: Cradle an egg in their gentle jaws.
Steven and Carrie DuComb from Michigan heard the rumor that Golden Retrievers can hold an egg in their mouths without breaking it and just had to try. Licensed veterinary technician knew her 8-year-old pup Sookie “would kill this,” according to NBC.
So Steven filmed as Carrie placed the egg in Sookie’s mouth. And what do you know? The egg came out unscathed because Sookie is a good, good dog. Carrie explained that Sookie balances things on her nose and loves tricks involving food, so she was perfect for the egg challenge. Carrie’s niece Haley Bowers posted the egg challenge video on Twitter, where it received over 8.8 million views. And thus, a derpy movement was born.
Since Sookie’s mind-boggling trick went viral, many other dog owners have tried to get their dogs to hold eggs in their mouths. And, well, some were more successful than others. There are dogs breaking eggs, dogs spitting eggs out, and dogs not getting into it at all. My dog would definitely fail at this. But there are some very good dogs who are holding those eggs like champs.
Check out some attempts below:
There has been some criticism of the egg challenge, though. Some are concerned the egg will break or the dog could get Salmonella. There are definite risks involved, and this challenge is a little bizarre. But as long as you’re careful you should be fine.

And whether or not your dog lets you stuff an egg in their mouth or not, they’re still a very good dog.
