Wednesday Wag: This dog playing with a polar bear is the cutest thing you’ll ever see

Brittany Semeniuk had no idea what would happen when she saw a polar bear approach a dog. But rather than attack, this bear was just looking to play.

Today in the world isn’t completely terrible news: A dog played with a polar bear and it’s the cutest thing you’ll ever see in your entire life.

We all know how dangerous polar bears can be. They’re giant and fast with huge claws and big teeth. I certainly don’t want to roll around on the ground with one. But sometimes nature gives us something beautiful.

Veterinary nurse Brittany Semeniuk and her vet partner went to Manitoba, Canada in November hoping to take some pictures of polar bears. Instead, they saw something amazing.

They came across a chained up sled dog, but then they saw a giant polar bear coming towards it and they knew things could get bad fast. “I had no idea what was going to happen,” Semeniuk told National Geographic.

But instead of the vicious attack we’d all expect, this friendly giant started playing with the cute pup! The two romped around and wrestled for a good 15 minutes and then the polar bear walked away. Just like that.

This is highly unusual. As National Geographic notes, while there have been some instances of polar bears being friendly towards dogs, there have been a number of times polar bears had to be taken out of the area because they killed and ate dogs.

Luckily, this time the dog came away unscathed. Semeniuk said that the pup “seemed to be totally fine.” Things were “a bit rough” but it was only because the polar bear didn’t “know his own strength.”

That said, Semeniuk acknowledged that interacting with polar bears can be “incredibly dangerous” for dogs and that “They have no choice but to interact with the bear.”

But this was no ordinary polar bear. He was just looking for a playmate. The dog seemed happy to oblige and we got to see one of the cutest animal friendships ever. And if a dog and a polar bear can get along, maybe anything’s possible.
