Grammys 2018: Patti LuPone brought the house down
Patti LuPone proved to us last night that she can still kill a performance of “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina,” especially in the original key.
At the Grammys last night, in a shocking performance to honor Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Patti LuPone pulled out an amazing rendition of “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.” Why was it shocking? Well, for starters, she and Andrew Lloyd Webber are not exactly friends.
If you recall, they had a big blowout lawsuit that resulted in Patti LuPone winning a lot of money that she then used to make a pool at her home that she named after Webber. It was pretty great. So the fact that she made up with him and honored him was a big deal all in itself.
Then she took to the stage and sang in the original key (another big deal). If you remember the movie Evita, Madonna sang the show-stopping number and it wasn’t nearly as high as last night’s performance. I like to think it was Patti LuPone’s way of saying that it should have been her in the movie in the first place.
But regardless, Patti showed us her acting chops and gave us one of the best performances of the night. I’m sure non-Broadway fans didn’t get it, and that’s fine. But let me tell you, watching Patti sing in HD was an other worldly experience that I will never forget. That and now we have GIFs of her raising her arms as Eva Peron to use whenever our hearts desire it.

You can check out more of our Grammy coverage here on Culturess but know that, to me, there was no better performance than Patti LuPone putting her differences aside and showing the world why she is still one of the best Broadway actresses out there.
