When are the 2019 Grammys?
By Lacy Baugher
The 2018 Grammy Awards only just concluded. Is it already time to start thinking about next year? You bet. Here’s the skinny on the 2019 Grammys.
This year’s Grammy Awards have only just concluded, but it’s already time to start looking ahead to next year’s ceremony.
As yet, the official date for the 61st annual Grammy Awards is still to be determined, but we already know where the ceremony will take place.
The Grammys 60th anniversary celebration took place at New York City’s Madison Square Garden, but don’t get too comfortable with this new location for the ceremony. The Grammys will return to its regular home in Los Angeles for 2019 – and for the next three years thereafter.
The Recording Academy announced last June that it signed a four-year deal with the AEG entertainment company to once again host the show at L.A.’s Staples Center. According to the Grammys website, the awards are estimated to bring $82 million in economic benefit to Los Angeles each year of the event, marking a projected revenue of $328 million over a four-year span.
This move probably shouldn’t come as a surprise to most people. After all, if we disregard the 2018 ceremony, the Awards have only been held in New York once in the past 19 years. Why? Well, as Taylor Swift would say, there’s been a little bad blood.
Previously, the Grammys basically alternated their location between New York and Los Angeles. Each city got a crack at music’s biggest night every other year. But thanks to a public-spat between Academy president Michael Greene and then-NYC mayor Rudy Guiliani, the Awards left New York for the Staples Center in 1999. They pretty much never looked back. The lone exception to this occurred in 2003.
CBS will continue to broadcast the Grammy Awards through 2026. The 2019 ceremony will mark the 47th consecutive year that the network has aired the show.
